My 12th grade english class and I have recently just finished Dante's Inferno.
You can guess that there was much discussion about what everyone thought, felt and deciphered from this book. Wrong. The discussion was dry no one talked, we are usually a very talkative class so it was a very weird thing to witness. I ended up hating the book at the end of the discussion because of the things that people were half-heartedly commenting on. I think the real reason that this happened was my teacher had asked us; Do you believe in God? That was the first thing that came out of her mouth. It toned down the discussion a lot because it gave everyone a place to stand in the class. Which was horrible on one hand but on the other it was supposed to make us have more to talk about. This tactic did not work whatsoever I was crushed I really wanted the discussion of this book to go well, I love discussion.
So my question is: When religion is involved, why does it spark such uncivil differences to come up? Why can't we all just accept everyone else's beliefs and not belittle other people?
